The sky is blue. The sun is shining. It hasn’t rained in weeks, but life is moving fast.

Spring is here. It’s such a beautiful time of the year. I write from California, so at least on this side of the world it is, but it’s not like we can slow down work life or school life or all the other parts of life just so we can watch butterflies fly by. While it would feel like heaven to lay on the grass, go to the beach, or watch the clouds move in the sky and daydream, a lot of us can’t take the time to do that.

The important thing is … We should. We should take that time. We should take that break. You should take that breather, even if it lasts only for a short time. You deserve it.

I go through phases where I feel like life is going by extremely fast or overwhelmingly slow. Whenever I feel like I want to sit around and admire flowers, it seems as though I have too many other things to do. I constantly need reminders to help me just be present and just to feel.

When the world around me is looking so beautiful – when the flowers are thriving and the sun looks glorious and the weather is perfect – sometimes that’s not how I feel on the inside. In fact, I feel like that a lot of the time. If you find yourself feeling like that too, I just want you to know that it’s okay. I’ve felt it all too many times, but spring is there to remind us how beautiful new beginnings can be. If you feel like you haven’t reached your new self or that person you’re trying to be yet, that’s okay too. You are not alone. Spring happens to remind us that one day – someday – our fresh start at a new life is bound to happen soon.

Here are some of my favorite songs that make it feel like spring for me when I’m sometimes struggling to feel that new kind of feeling. I hope they allow you to take that breather, or allow you to feel whatever it is you feel too. We go. We grow.

Hearts on Fire by Passenger

“I’ll see you someday before the end.
I don’t know where and I don’t know when.”

Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac

“I follow you down until the sound
Of my voice will haunt you.
You’ll never get away from the sound
Of the woman who loves you.”

Wasn’t Expecting That by Jamie Lawson

“Isn’t it strange how a life can be changed
In the flicker of the sweetest smile.”

River by Leon Bridges

“Been traveling these wide roads for so long.
My heart’s been far from you,
Ten-thousand miles gone.”

Peer Pressure by James Bay featuring Julia Michaels

“You’re dancing around on my mind every second
I’m under control till you’re in front of me.”

Spring Is Here by Ella Fitzgerald

“Spring is here! Why doesn’t my heart go dancing?”

Quiet Your Mind by Zac Brown Band

“I hear the waves.
Sun beatin’ down on my shoulders.
It’s a near-perfect day.
Wishin’ I wouldn’t get any older.
They say that it’s gone before you know it now.”

For Once In My Life by Stevie Wonder

“For once in my life I won’t let sorrow hurt me.”

Heartbeats by Jose Gonzalez

“One night to push and scream,
And then relief.
Ten days of perfect tunes.
The colors red and blue.”

Clean by Taylor Swift

“The drought was the very worst
When the flowers that we’d grown together died of thirst.
Rain came pouring down. When I was drowning,
That’s when I could finally breathe.”

Just because the seasons change fast, it doesn’t mean you have to. Being in search of the person you want to be is awesome, but please don’t feel like there’s this pressure that you have to find yourself by tomorrow, or by the time summer rolls around. Flowers take time to grow. It takes time to feel clean. See you at your own pace.

I want to make beautiful things, even if nobody cares.
